Glasgow Gailes

The Course itself

Glasgow Gailes lies on a marvellous stretch of links land between Troon and Irvine on the Ayrshire coast. Less than an hour from Glasgow. Glasgow Gailes is a challenging layout – tough and traditionally Scottish, but above all else, fair.

Glasgow Gailes received another endorsement With changes made to the Open qualifying structure. The practice of relying solely on neighbours of the hosting venues has been abandoned in favour of a single yardstick. The Gailes course was judged by the R&A to be the truest test of a links golfer and was adopted as Scotland’s representative as of 2014.

Glasgow Gailes is set slightly inland from Western Gailes, which does lend it a little bit of heathland character in places, and doesn’t perhaps make it quite so vulnerable to the wind. We’re dealing in fractions of differentiation however.

The challenge starts with a steady stream of four consecutive par fours followed by the signature hole, a par five dog-leg with out-of-bounds to the right and a treacherous green that’s guarded by strategically placed bunkers.

After the fifth is bagged and tagged, the course momentarily relents with a neat par three, only to bite back with another demanding run of five par fours. With its undulating fairways, fine greens and subtle qualities, it is an honest test of golfing skills in true links fashion

A big part of the defenders arsenal here is the whins (gorse) and fairway heater. The former is brutal and nearly always means a lost ball. The latter isn’t quite so punitive, but it’s thick and rugged and will nearly always present you with a terrible lie.

As is the nature of this stretch of coastline, wind is your constant enemy and learning how to read it, and negotiate a safe passage is critical. The hole score wrecker however can be found on those holes that have brought the railway into play. Good, accurate driving with depth, is the secret here.
