Boat of Garten Golf Course

The Course itself

The course plays short, and you need only resort for the driver on just a couple of holes. Indeed, it starts with a par 3 which can be a little unsettling for those who like to get their eye in first, and another one follows at the third!

Above all else though, ‘the Boat’ is a fun and aesthetic course and is usually included as a lovely way of winding down your Sunday journey back from the Highlands to Edinburgh. With the River Spey on one side, and a steam railway on the other, its has natural boundary lines, but the most visually striking characteristic are the distant views of the snow capped Cairngorm mountains with such distinctive features as the Lairig Ghru and the northern corries of Braeriach, which provide a wonderful backdrop to this unique course.

Although difficult to choose from several great holes, the 6th (The Avenue) is often regarded as the course’s “signature” hole. A good drive down the narrow tree-lined dogleg fairway leaves a mid-iron approach shot to the plateau green, which is guarded by bunkers to the left and right.

It would perhaps be a mistake to think the courses lack of length makes it a pushover though. Gorse, broom, and whins, not to mention fairways flanked by characteristic silver birch, ensures it has its fair share of defences more than capable of penalising wild shots from the tee. With some strategic thought as to how you want to play your second though, the thinking golfer should be able to conjure up the solutions to the questions posed. It isn’t always necessary to resort to the biggest weapon you have in your bag to out perform a longer hitter. As on every hole at Boat of Garten, accuracy is rewarded but beware the wayward driver!

It might be worth mentioning that if you do have any reluctant golfers in the party, this might actually be your best chance of cajoling them into joining in. At the very least it possibly does conform to the description of a “good walk”.
